Styria

Also known as Steiermark

Styria (Steiermark) is a mountainous region of south-eastern Austria, with its capital at Graz. It takes its name from the castle of Steyr, seat of the Otakar margraves who ruled it from 1056. It became a duchy in 1180 and passed to the Habsburgs in 1282, remaining one of their core lands. Its southern part, Lower Styria, went to Yugoslavia in 1919 and now belongs to Slovenia.
