Lower Styria

Also known as Štajerska

Lower Styria is the southern, Slovene-speaking part of the historical Duchy of Styria, around Maribor, Celje and Ptuj, now in north-eastern Slovenia. Part of the Habsburg lands for centuries, it was exposed to Ottoman raids in the 15th and 16th centuries. After the First World War it was separated from Austrian Styria and joined the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes in 1918.
