Sirmium
Sirmium was a Roman city on the Sava river in Pannonia, today Sremska Mitrovica in Serbia. In the late 3rd and 4th centuries it was one of the imperial residences of the Tetrarchy and the birthplace of several emperors, among them Probus. Later held by the Ostrogoths and the Gepids, it was taken by the Avars in 582 after a long siege.
