Macedonia (region)
Macedonia is a historical region of the central Balkans, centred on the Vardar and Aliakmon valleys and the plain around Thessaloniki. It takes its name from the ancient kingdom of Macedon and later formed a Roman province, a contested borderland between Byzantium, Bulgaria and Serbia, and part of the Ottoman Empire until 1912–1913. It is now divided mainly between Greece, North Macedonia and Bulgaria.
