Kingdom of Prilep

1371 CE – 1395 CE · capital Prilep

Western Macedonian realm of King Vukašin and his son Marko, whose life as an Ottoman vassal inspired the hero of South Slav epic poetry.

Origins

Vukašin Mrnjavčević, a Serbian noble, was crowned king in 1365 as co-ruler with Emperor Uroš V of the Serbian Empire, ruling lands in western Macedonia from Prilep. With his brother Jovan Uglješa of the Despotate of Serres he led the campaign against the Ottomans in 1371.

Rule and society

After Vukašin was killed at the Maritsa in 1371, his son Marko inherited the royal title and a much smaller realm around Prilep, Ohrid and the Pelagonian plain. Marko became an Ottoman vassal, minted coins and completed Marko's Monastery near Skopje, begun by his father. His neighbours took Ohrid and other lands.

Decline and legacy

Marko died fighting for the Ottomans against Mircea the Elder of Wallachia at Rovine in 1395, and his lands were annexed by the Ottomans. As Kraljević Marko, he became the best-loved hero of Serbian, Macedonian and Bulgarian folk epic.
