North Macedonia
North Macedonia is a landlocked country in the central Balkans, with its capital at Skopje. Part of the Ottoman Empire until 1912, the region was divided after the Balkan Wars, and its northern part became a republic of Yugoslavia in 1944. It declared independence in 1991 and took the name North Macedonia in 2019 under the Prespa Agreement with Greece. Both it and Bulgaria claim the heritage of the 1903 Ilinden Uprising.
