North Maluku is a province of eastern Indonesia covering the northern Maluku Islands, including Halmahera, Ternate, Tidore, Bacan and Morotai. Its small volcanic islands were the original home of cloves and the seat of the sultanates of Ternate, Tidore, Bacan and Jailolo. The province was separated from Maluku in 1999, and its capital is Sofifi on Halmahera.
