Maluku Islands
The Maluku Islands, or Moluccas, are an archipelago in eastern Indonesia, historically known as the Spice Islands. They were the original source of cloves, nutmeg and mace, which were highly prized in global trade. The Dutch East India Company seized control of the spice trade there in the seventeenth century, making it a cornerstone of the Dutch Empire's economy.
