Maltese language

Maltese is the national language of Malta and an official language of the European Union. It descends from the Siculo-Arabic spoken in Sicily and Malta under Arab rule from the 9th century, and is the only Semitic language written in the Latin script. Centuries of rule by Sicilians, the Knights Hospitaller and the British have given it a large Italian and English vocabulary.
