Aghlabid dynasty

800–909 · 9th century · Also known as Aghlabids

The Aghlabid dynasty ruled Ifriqiya, roughly present-day Tunisia and eastern Algeria, from Kairouan as hereditary emirs under nominal Abbasid authority from 800 to 909. In 827 they began the long conquest of Byzantine Sicily, which created the Emirate of Sicily. They built the Great Mosque of Kairouan in its present form and were overthrown by the Fatimids in 909.
