Internal Macedonian Revolutionary Organization

1893–1934 · 19th century · Also known as IMRO, Internal Macedonian-Adrianople Revolutionary Organisation

The Internal Macedonian Revolutionary Organization was a secret revolutionary society founded in Thessaloniki in 1893 to win autonomy for Macedonia and the Adrianople region from Ottoman rule. In 1903 it launched the Ilinden Uprising in Macedonia, during which rebels proclaimed the Kruševo Republic, and the Preobrazhenie Uprising in Thrace, which created the Strandzha Commune. Both were crushed by Ottoman troops. The organisation later split into factions and was suppressed in Bulgaria in 1934.
