Thessaloniki
Thessaloniki is the second-largest city of Greece and the main port of Macedonia, at the head of the Thermaic Gulf. Founded around 315 BCE by Cassander, it was a leading city of the Roman and Byzantine empires and, under Ottoman rule from 1430, home to a large Sephardic Jewish community. It became Greek in 1912, and most of its Jews were deported to Auschwitz in 1943.
