Thermaic Gulf

Also known as Gulf of Thessaloniki

The Thermaic Gulf is an inlet of the north-western Aegean Sea, bordered by Pieria, Macedonia and the Chalcidice peninsula, with Thessaloniki at its head. It takes its name from the ancient town of Therma, on whose site Thessaloniki was founded in 315 BCE. Rivers such as the Axios and Haliacmon flow into it, and Greek colonies such as Methone and Pydna stood on its shores.
