Chalcidice

Also known as Halkidiki

Chalcidice is a peninsula of northern Greece in Central Macedonia, ending in three prongs: Kassandra, Sithonia and Mount Athos. It took its name from the many colonies founded there by Chalcis and other Greek cities from the 8th century BCE, which later formed the Chalcidian League around Olynthus until Philip II of Macedon destroyed it in 348 BCE. Mount Athos is home to a self-governing monastic community.
