Amyntas III of Macedon

d. 370 BCE · 4th century BCE

Amyntas III was king of Macedon from about 393 to 370 BCE and father of Philip II. His reign was beset by Illyrian invasions and rival claimants, and the Chalcidian League led by Olynthus seized much of his kingdom, including Pella, until Sparta intervened and broke the league in 379 BCE. He held his kingdom together through alliances with Sparta and Athens.
