Timočani

700 CE – 818 CE (approx.)

Slavic tribe of the Timok valley that broke from Bulgaria in 818 and sought the protection of the Frankish emperor.

Origins

The Timočani lived along the Timok river in modern eastern Serbia and north-western Bulgaria, among the Slavs who settled the area in the 7th century. They are known almost entirely from the Royal Frankish Annals.

Rule and society

Little is known of their society. In 818 their envoys came to Louis the Pious, having left the alliance of the Bulgarians, and they then joined the rising of Ljudevit of the Duchy of Pannonian Croatia against the Franks.

Decline and legacy

After 819 they disappear from the sources. The First Bulgarian Empire under Omurtag reasserted control over the middle Danube in the 820s, and the Timok valley remained Bulgarian.

Few sources survive for this state; details are uncertain.
