Low Countries
The Low Countries is the coastal region of north-western Europe comprising present-day Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg. Much of it lay within the Holy Roman Empire and later passed to the Habsburgs. The revolt of the northern provinces against Spanish rule from 1568 created the Dutch Republic and became a long drain on the Spanish Empire.
