Treaty of Prüm

855 · 9th century

The Treaty of Prüm was the arrangement of September 855 by which the dying Emperor Lothair I divided Middle Francia among his three sons at the abbey of Prüm in the Eifel. Louis II received Italy with the imperial title, Lothair II the northern lands that became Lotharingia, and Charles Provence and Burgundy. Lothair I then entered the monastery, where he died days later.
