Person
Æthelred I of Wessex
Æthelred I was king of Wessex from 865 to 871, the fourth son of Æthelwulf to reign. His reign saw the arrival of the Great Heathen Army, and in 871, the year of battles, he and his younger brother Alfred fought the Danes repeatedly, winning at Ashdown. He died after Easter 871 and was succeeded by Alfred rather than by his own young sons.
