Alvise Cadamosto

c. 1432–1483 · 15th century · Also known as Alvise da Mosto, Cadamosto

Alvise Cadamosto was a Venetian merchant and navigator who sailed for Prince Henry of Portugal along the coast of West Africa in 1455 and 1456. He explored the Senegal and Gambia rivers and visited the court of the ruler of Cayor, then part of the Jolof realm. His account of the voyages, published in Italy in 1507, is one of the earliest European descriptions of West African societies, trade and the exchange of horses for slaves.
