Ambon Island
Ambon Island is an island in the Maluku archipelago of eastern Indonesia, home to the city of Ambon, capital of Maluku province. Valued for cloves, it drew the Portuguese in the 16th century and was taken by the Dutch East India Company in 1605, which made it the centre of its clove monopoly. Its northern Hitu peninsula long resisted Dutch control.
