Amir Kabir

1807–1852 · 19th century · Also known as Mirza Taqi Khan Farahani

Amir Kabir (Mirza Taqi Khan Farahani) was chief minister of Iran under Naser al-Din Shah from 1848 to 1851. He reformed the finances and the army, curbed foreign influence and founded the Dar ol-Fonun, Iran's first modern college, which opened in 1851. Court rivals secured his dismissal, and he was put to death at Kashan in 1852; he is remembered in Iran as a pioneer of modernisation.
