Andriantsoly
Andriantsoly was the last independent Sakalava king of Boina in north-western Madagascar, a convert to Islam. When the Merina under Radama I took Mahajanga in 1824 he fled to the Comoros and later made himself ruler of Mayotte. Threatened by rivals, he sold the island to France in 1841 in return for a pension, giving France its first foothold in the archipelago.
