Anthonie Heinsius

1641–1720 · 17th century

Anthonie Heinsius was Grand Pensionary of Holland from 1689 until his death in 1720 and a close ally of the stadtholder and English king William III. After William's death in 1702 he directed Dutch policy in the War of the Spanish Succession, working with the Duke of Marlborough and Prince Eugene against France. The war's cost left the Republic heavily indebted, and the Peace of Utrecht of 1713 brought it few gains.
