Archias of Corinth

8th century BCE · 8th century BCE

Archias was a nobleman of the Bacchiad family of Corinth who, according to Greek tradition, led the colonists who founded Syracuse in Sicily in 734 or 733 BCE. Ancient accounts say he left Corinth after a scandal and consulted the oracle at Delphi before sailing. The settlers first occupied the island of Ortygia, which became the core of the city.
