c. 308–215 BCE · 3rd century BCE · Also known as Hieron II of Syracuse

Hiero II of Syracuse was a general who seized power in Syracuse and took the title of king after defeating the Mamertines at the Longanus river around 265 BCE. Early in the First Punic War he allied with Rome in 263 BCE and remained a loyal ally until his death. His long reign brought Syracuse prosperity, and Archimedes worked at his court.
