Hiero I of Syracuse
Hiero I was tyrant of Gela and then, from 478 BCE, of Syracuse, succeeding his brother Gelon. In 474 BCE his fleet, allied with Cumae, destroyed an Etruscan fleet off Cumae, breaking Etruscan sea power. He moved the people of Catana and Naxos to found the city of Aetna and hosted poets such as Pindar, Aeschylus and Simonides at his court.
