Lex Rhodia

Also known as Rhodian Sea Law

The Lex Rhodia was the maritime law of Rhodes on jettison: when cargo was thrown overboard to save a ship, the loss was shared among all whose property had been saved. Roman jurists adopted the rule, and it appears in Justinian's Digest. The principle passed into Byzantine and later European law and survives in the modern rules of general average.
