Lex Manilia

66 BCE · 1st century BCE

The Lex Manilia was a Roman law proposed by the tribune Gaius Manilius in 66 BCE that gave Pompey command of the war against Mithridates VI of Pontus and Tigranes of Armenia, with very wide powers in the east. Cicero spoke in its favour in his speech De imperio Cn. Pompei. Such extraordinary commands concentrated power in single generals and weakened the Republic.
