Mitridate, re di Ponto

1770 · 18th century

Mitridate, re di Ponto is an opera seria in three acts by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, written when he was fourteen and first performed in Milan on 26 December 1770. The libretto by Vittorio Amedeo Cigna-Santi is based on Racine's tragedy Mithridate. It tells of Mithridates VI of Pontus and his two sons' rivalry for his betrothed, Aspasia, and was Mozart's first great success in Italy.
