Mixe
The Mixe, who call themselves Ayuuk, are an Indigenous people of the mountains of north-eastern Oaxaca, Mexico, speaking a language of the Mixe-Zoque family. From their rugged homeland around Zempoaltépetl they resisted the Zapotecs and the Aztecs and were only slowly brought under Spanish rule. They number more than 100,000 today and keep a strong tradition of community self-government.
