Cocijoeza

15th–16th century · 16th century

Cocijoeza was the Zapotec king of Zaachila in the late 15th and early 16th centuries. Around 1490 he conquered the Isthmus of Tehuantepec and moved his seat there, then resisted the Aztec ruler Ahuitzotl in a long siege of the mountain fortress of Guiengola. Peace was sealed by his marriage to an Aztec princess, and their son Cocijopii ruled Tehuantepec when the Spanish arrived.
