Valley of Oaxaca
The Valley of Oaxaca is a highland valley in southern Mexico, formed by three arms that meet at the modern city of Oaxaca. It was the heartland of Zapotec civilisation: early villages such as San José Mogote grew there, and around 500 BCE Monte Albán was founded on a hilltop where the arms meet. After Monte Albán declined, Zaachila and Mitla became the leading Zapotec centres before the Aztec and Spanish conquests.
