Zapotecs
The Zapotecs are an indigenous people of Oaxaca in southern Mexico. Their ancestors built Monte Albán, which from about 500 BCE to 800 CE was the capital of one of the first states of Mesoamerica, and later centres such as Mitla. In the Postclassic period Zapotec kingdoms such as Zaachila and Tehuantepec fought the Mixtecs and the Aztecs. Zapotec languages are still spoken by several hundred thousand people, and Benito Juárez was Zapotec.
