Gulf Coast of Mexico

The Gulf Coast of Mexico is the lowland region along the Gulf of Mexico, covering modern Veracruz and Tabasco. It was the homeland of the Olmec, the first complex society of Mesoamerica, and later of El Tajín and the Totonacs. Peoples and traders from the Gulf lowlands, such as the Olmeca-Xicalanca, carried influences into the central highlands, Yucatán and the Maya world.
