Veracruz
Veracruz is a state of Mexico stretching along the Gulf of Mexico coast between Tamaulipas and Tabasco. Its tropical lowlands were home to the Olmec centres of San Lorenzo and Tres Zapotes, the Classic city of El Tajín and the Huastec and Totonac peoples. The state takes its name from the port of Veracruz, founded by Hernán Cortés in 1519, and its capital is Xalapa.
