Guanajuato
Guanajuato is a city in central Mexico, capital of the state of the same name, built in a narrow ravine. Silver was found there in the mid-16th century, and its mines, above all La Valenciana, made it one of the richest mining centres in the world in the 18th century. In 1810 Miguel Hidalgo's insurgents stormed its fortified granary, the Alhóndiga de Granaditas, at the start of the war of independence.
