Juan Diego

1474–1548 · 16th century · Also known as Juan Diego Cuauhtlatoatzin, Saint Juan Diego

Juan Diego was a Nahua convert to whom, according to Catholic tradition, the Virgin of Guadalupe appeared on the hill of Tepeyac near Mexico City in December 1531. The image said to have been imprinted on his cloak became the focus of the Guadalupe devotion. He was canonised by Pope John Paul II in 2002 as the first indigenous saint of the Americas.
