Our Lady of Guadalupe

1531 · 16th century · Also known as Virgin of Guadalupe

Our Lady of Guadalupe is a title of the Virgin Mary associated with apparitions to Juan Diego at Tepeyac, near Mexico City, in December 1531, and with the image venerated in her basilica there. The devotion grew through the colonial period into a symbol shared by indigenous people, mestizos and criollos. Miguel Hidalgo carried her banner in 1810, and she remains a central emblem of Mexican identity.
