Oun Kham

1811–1895 · 19th century

Oun Kham was king of Luang Prabang in the late 19th century, a vassal of Siam. In 1887 Chinese Haw bandits and their Tai allies sacked his capital, and the French vice-consul Auguste Pavie helped the elderly king escape down the Mekong. The episode strengthened French claims, and after the Franco-Siamese crisis of 1893 the kingdom came under the French protectorate of Laos.
