Auguste Pavie

1847–1925 · 19th century

Auguste Pavie was a French explorer and diplomat who mapped much of Laos and Cambodia. As French vice-consul at Luang Prabang, he rescued King Oun Kham when Chinese Haw raiders sacked the city in 1887, winning the loyalty of the court. His work prepared the Franco-Siamese crisis of 1893, after which the lands east of the Mekong became the French protectorate of Laos.
