Mussolini's speech to parliament opens his dictatorship
In a speech to the Italian Chamber of Deputies, Mussolini declared he alone took responsibility for all that had happened, including the murder of Giacomo Matteotti. The speech launched his open dictatorship.
10 July
The Scopes 'Monkey Trial' opens in Tennessee
Teacher John Scopes went on trial in Dayton for teaching human evolution. The clash between Clarence Darrow and William Jennings Bryan turned a local case into a national debate on science and faith.
18 July
The first volume of Hitler's Mein Kampf is published
Hitler's autobiography and manifesto, written partly in prison, set out his antisemitism and his aim of conquering 'living space' in the east. Its ideas foreshadowed the policies of the Third Reich.

John Scopes is found guilty of teaching evolution
A Dayton jury convicted teacher John Scopes of breaking Tennessee's ban on teaching human evolution, and he was fined 100 dollars. The verdict was later overturned on a technicality.

The Alhucemas landing was an amphibious assault by Spanish forces, supported by France, on the bay of Alhucemas (Al Hoceima) in northern Morocco in September 1925.
