Khải Định

1885–1925 · 20th century · Also known as Khai Dinh

Khải Định was emperor of Vietnam of the Nguyen dynasty from 1916 to 1925, under the French protectorate. Placed on the throne after the exile of Duy Tân, he cooperated closely with the colonial authorities and visited France in 1922, drawing criticism from nationalists such as Phan Châu Trinh. His elaborate tomb near Huế combines Vietnamese and European styles.
