    First commercial transatlantic telephone service opens

    A radio-telephone link connected New York and London for paying customers. A three-minute call cost 75 dollars, and transatlantic telephone cables did not arrive until 1956.

    Charles Lindbergh takes off for Paris

    Lindbergh left Roosevelt Field, New York, in the Spirit of St Louis. He landed at Le Bourget 33.5 hours later, completing the first solo non-stop transatlantic flight.

    Lindbergh lands in Paris after flying the Atlantic alone

    Charles Lindbergh touched down at Le Bourget after 33.5 hours in the air, greeted by a crowd of some 100,000. He won the $25,000 Orteig Prize and instant worldwide fame.

    The Jazz Singer premieres in New York

    Warner Bros released The Jazz Singer, starring Al Jolson, the first feature film with synchronised dialogue and singing. Its success ended the silent era within a few years.

    Treaty of Jeddah (1927)

    The Treaty of Jeddah, signed on 20 May 1927 between Britain and Ibn Saud, recognised the full independence of his Kingdom of Hejaz and Nejd and its dependencies, replacing the Treaty of Darin of 1915, which had made Nejd a British protectorate.
