1927–1949 · 20th century

The Chinese Civil War was fought between the Nationalist government of the Kuomintang and the Chinese Communist Party, in two phases from 1927 to 1937 and from 1945 to 1949, interrupted by the war against Japan. The Communists under Mao Zedong won and proclaimed the People's Republic of China in October 1949, while the Nationalists withdrew to Taiwan.
