Kuomintang

founded 1912 · 20th century · Also known as Chinese Nationalist Party, KMT

The Kuomintang, or Chinese Nationalist Party, is a political party founded by Sun Yat-sen and his allies in 1912, growing out of the revolutionary Tongmenghui. Under Chiang Kai-shek it reunited much of China through the Northern Expedition and ruled the Republic of China from Nanjing from 1928. Defeated by the Communists in the civil war, it retreated to Taiwan in 1949, governed there under martial law until 1987 and remains a major party.
