1926–1928 · 20th century

The Northern Expedition was the military campaign of the Kuomintang's National Revolutionary Army, led by Chiang Kai-shek, to defeat the northern warlords and reunify China. Launched from Guangzhou in 1926, it took the Yangtze valley, split the Nationalist–Communist alliance in 1927 and entered Beijing in 1928, ending the Beiyang government.
