    Abdulaziz ibn Saud proclaimed King of the Hejaz

    After conquering Mecca and Medina, the Sultan of Nejd was proclaimed King of the Hejaz in the Great Mosque of Mecca. In 1932 he merged his realms into the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

  2. 16 March

    Robert Goddard launches the first liquid-fuelled rocket

    At Auburn, Massachusetts, Goddard's petrol and liquid-oxygen rocket flew for 2.5 seconds and rose about 12 metres. The principle underlies most modern space launch vehicles.

  3. 9 May

    Byrd and Bennett claim to fly over the North Pole

    Richard Byrd and Floyd Bennett flew a Fokker trimotor from Spitsbergen and reported reaching the Pole. Doubts about their speed and navigation have kept the claim in dispute.

  4. 12 May

    Airship Norge crosses the North Pole

    Roald Amundsen, Umberto Nobile and Lincoln Ellsworth flew over the Pole in the airship Norge on a flight from Svalbard to Alaska. It is the first undisputed arrival at the North Pole.

    The May Coup was the seizure of power in Poland by Marshal Józef Piłsudski from 12 to 14 May 1926.

    The General Strike of 1926 was a nine-day strike in the United Kingdom from 3 to 12 May 1926, called by the Trades Union Congress in support of coal miners facing wage cuts and longer hours.
