1862–1926 · 20th century

Ugyen Wangchuck was the first hereditary king of Bhutan, elected by an assembly of clergy, officials and leading families at Punakha in 1907. As penlop of Trongsa he defeated his rivals in the civil wars of the late 19th century and won British favour by helping the Younghusband expedition to Tibet in 1904. The 1910 Treaty of Punakha placed Bhutan's foreign relations under British guidance.
