Lhotshampa
The Lhotshampa are the Nepali-speaking people of southern Bhutan, mostly descended from migrants who settled the southern foothills from the late 19th century. In the late 1980s and early 1990s Bhutan's national identity policies and a citizenship census led to the departure or expulsion of over 100,000 of them, who lived for years in refugee camps in eastern Nepal before most were resettled in third countries.
